Clothes Moths
Do you have a clothes moth infestation?
Casemaking clothes moths
(Monopis crocicapitella)
Casemaking moths are less common than webbing clothes moths. When feeding on fabrics they disguise themselves in a protective casing which is made of the garment fibres they have consumed. Casemaking moths then carry around their protective cases and feed from inside them. They cleverly create their protective cases to match the same colours of fabric they have just consumed. Therefore, this can make them difficult to initially detect.
Webbing clothes moths
(Tineloa bisselliella)
Webbing moths tend to feed on clothes that are woollen with moisture on them. Clothes that are often damp, sweaty or dirty, as their larvae requires the moisture to remain hydrated. To hide themselves from view during their feeding process, they spin a tube of silk webbing.
> Why are clothes moths pests?
Clothes moths are pests as they attach themselves to fibres and feed on them. In doing so, they damage a variety of household items that are covered in materials, such as fur, wool and silk. They then chew holes in such items and leave behind their faeces droppings.
> How do I get rid of clothes moths?
Clothes moths are a nuisance because they can be difficult to eradicate on your own. This is due to the fact that their eggs and larvae breed rapidly and then camouflage themselves in a fibre protective casing. Whilst in their feeding cases, they hide well within garments which makes them extremely difficult to spot. Washing and dry cleaning garments will help but will not successfully eliminate an infestation on its own, you do require professional chemicals to eradicate them. When speaking to a GoKill advisor about your problem, they can advise you further on the most appropriate way to effectively control and eliminate your infestation.
